Population responses to observed climate variability across multiple organismal groups

چکیده

A major challenge in ecology is to understand how populations are affected by increased climate variability. Here, we assessed the effects of observed variability on different organismal groups (amphibians, insects, mammals, herbaceous plants and reptiles) estimating extent which interannual variation annual population growth rates (CV?) absolute value long-term rate (|log ?|) were associated with short-term We used empirical data (? 20 consecutive years abundances) from 59 wild Northern Hemisphere, quantified variabilities climatic conditions (temperature precipitation active inactive seasons) calculated over four- eight-year sliding time windows. a positive relationship between temperature season at shorter timescale only. Moreover, |log ?| was positively both timescales. Otherwise, direction relationships dynamics (if any) depended largely group question. Both CV? correlated negatively species' lifespan, indicating general differences short-lived long-lived species that not related Our results suggest although temporal magnitude partially variability, demographic responses fluctuations might still be population-specific rather than specific given groups, driven other factors

Multisatellite observed responses of precipitation and its extremes to interannual climate variability

[1] The consistency of precipitation variability estimated from the multiple satellite-based observing systems is assessed. There is generally good agreement between TRMM TMI, SSM/I, GPCP and AMSRE data sets for the inter-annual variability of precipitation since 1997 but the HOAPS data set appears to overestimate the magnitude of variability. Over the tropical ocean the TRMM 3B42 data set prod...

Observed climate variability and change of relevance to the biosphere

In this paper we review the current instrumental evidence regarding climate variations and change during the 20th century emphasizing those changes that are likely to have direct interactions with the biosphere. Three basic questions are addressed: (1) Is the climate getting warmer, (2) is the hydrologic cycle changing, and (3) is the climate becoming more extreme. Based on global near-surface ...
